response to the press

Kickstart response to recent interviews conducted by the press:

An article was published today in Columbus Alive on our shop and had several errors or omissions which could easily mislead the reader. We will attempt to address these issues here with a 3-part approach:

  1. Identify and address errors in print
  2. Provide some missing information not printed
  3. Provide our own Interview to the public.

1. Errors

In a very recent article in print, it was printed that we will soon be selling “casual riding shirts and shorts” and that is not true. While we plan to sell riding apparel and casual wear, I’m not sure that riding shorts are being made for motorsports of any kind. Aside from the obvious safety issues, it just doesn’t look good. That’s fashion ignorance.

Also very recently, a publication claims that our scooters have “$2,000-$2,700 price tags that cover two years of maintenance.” All the scooters we sell come with at least a 2-year warranty. None of our scooters come with 2 years of pre-paid maintenance. The distinction is an easy oversight, but no less important to someone that thinks they won’t have to pay for service for 2 years.

A large newspaper recently cited that my wife’s name is Jodi Stully. It is not. I call my wife Stully (because her maiden name was Stull) and sometimes even refer to her as Jodi, but Jodi Stully is simply wrong.

In the same brief article, I’m quoted as saying “we want to make it a good place for a grab-and-go breakfast.” I want this to be clear—never have I uttered the phrase “grab-and-go” (in any context). To close one article, one reporter printed, “Hours to be determined.” While we certainly have numerous things to determine (for example, who we’ll give interviews to in the future), our hours have been posted on both the inside and outside of the front door to our shop and on our website for quite some time before the interview was conducted.

2. Missing information

A recent business journal published 2 quotes by me—the first makes no sense out of context: “"We thought, what could be less intimidating than a coffee shop?" said owner Chris Cannon.” The issue raised was that people not familiar with scooters are often too intimidated (or not interested) to go into a motorcycle shop, but might actually ask questions in a different environment. Now I might not be the wordsmithiest orator around, but the next quote should’ve been presented differently because I’m not really sure I said such a thing as, “ ‘People may be reluctant to go to a motorcycle shop, but if you're on your way downtown, maybe you're thinking about buying a scooter and you need to get your morning coffee. They might not ask any questions your first time, but eventually they will.’ ” I often say some pretty stupid things (like wordsmithiest), but that last quote sounds too scattered even for me.

The most recently-published article on The Kickstart begins with, “It’s hard to get Chris Cannon to be serious.” This is true; very true, but there’s nothing in the article that’s not serious.

Every question the reporter asked me was prepared in a question-answer report written specifically for this individual (it was even placed into an expensive folder with a logo sticker on the front). While I asked (begged really) that my written answers be used, sadly none were.

The information prepared solely for use in this one particular newspaper and handed to the interviewer immediately after introductions and before any discussion, follows (note: both questions and answers below were written by me)—

Kickstart Interview - Q & A

press / where did we get the idea?
kickstart / I blame my wife for the concept. I wanted to write songs for pets, but she convinced me that this was a better business idea.
press / why coffee and scooters?
kickstart / I wanted to combine all my hobbies into a business, but a coffee and scooter and beer and cigars and snake-charming shop didn’t sound “profitable” enough for my wife (she can be very mean).
press / what scooters will you carry?
kickstart / We currently offer only 2 lines: Lambretta and Diamo. We wanted to provide value-priced scooters that are extremely reliable; both companies provide 2-year warranties.
press / do you service scooters?
kickstart / Of course. Bob George is our fulltime mechanic. He’s overqualified for the job, but he works here anyways.
press / what kind of coffee?

kickstart / Caruso’s coffee. We don’t sell coffee roasted here in Columbus because we wanted to offer something different. We had several criteria when selecting a roaster:

  • The coffee had to be exceptional.
  • It needed to be fresh-roasted by someone with experience in the industry.
  • It should be different than most shops in Columbus.

We cupped coffees from numerous roasters in and around Ohio and found Caruso’s to be fantastic.

press / what food items will you have?

kickstart / Cupcakes, cookies, scones, biscotti, candy, other pastries/baked goods but not shrimp cocktail

press / what’s special about your coffee shop? What makes it different?
kickstart / We provide a fun place to get a great cup of coffee. Our employees have fun working here which should elevate the spirit of those who walk in the door and we will also sell retail items to enhance the quality of life for everyone (skeptics should try the monkey-picked tea or caffeinated soap).
press / what’s special about your scooter shop? Why would someone buy a scooter from you rather than someplace else in town?

kickstart / We provide excellent customer service and our prices are low. We don’t haggle over prices; we sell at the manufacturer’s retail price. All of our scooters are very reliable and come with a 2-year warranty and most have a 12 month roadside assistance. The Lambretta line has been redesigned from the vintage Lambretta scooters from decades ago and are very modern in look and build components. The Lambretta name has been synonymous with great scooters for over 60 years. All Diamo scooters meet strict quality control measures and are fully tested at the individual component level during manufacturing and at final assembly to insure reliability. All Diamo products must pass a detailed 76 point check list that covers all components of the product to insure customers receive the highest quality standards. We believe that the relaxed atmosphere of an independent coffee shop will provide the public with a great facility for learning all about scooters. There’s no better scooter buying environment.

press / will you have any promotions?
kickstart / Yes. We are active in the community and plan to host a number of different events in the next couple of months, including the barbeque dinner for the Columbus Cutters scooter club Scoot-a-que.
press / have you ever wrestled a giraffe?
kickstart / No, but as soon as I can make weight for the bantam division, I will contend for the title if a league forms.
press / what’s the difference between a midget and a dwarf?
kickstart / Dwarfism is most commonly caused by achondroplasia, which results in disproportionately sized arms and legs. Officially, the term “dwarf” is generally used to describe a person with a medical or genetic condition resulting in an adult height of 4’10” or less. The term “midget” is sometimes used to describe a proportionate dwarf. Since it has bad associations with old circus freak shows, the term is not very PC these days. So, yes, there is a difference, but it seems that “dwarf” or “little person” is more acceptable. Even “person of short stature” works for some.
press / how much experience do you have running a coffee and scooter shop?
kickstart / There’s only one guy that knows more about running a coffee and scooter shop in the country and he’s in Rhode Island with Java Speed. I urge you to compare our 2 shops (he doesn’t make espresso-based drinks though). He’s a really cool guy and has more tattoos than me, but I don’t think he’s ever passed the CPA exam (that last part is just conjecture, I really don’t know if he has or not).
press / your shoes match the shirt you’re wearing; is that on purpose?
  kickstart / No.
press / I’ve heard that you’re a drinking man; what’s your favorite summer drink?
  kickstart / What's yours?
press / courgar water from Surly Girl; it's very tasty.
